Starting a Series

Sometimes when I am working, I get an idea in my head that would make a great series, and I start to formulate ideas on what the paintings or drawings might look like. One thing to think about when creating a series is cohesion between the paintings. That even if they are a still life, but all slightly different angles, or the message is similar throughout, or even if the images tell a story, you have to weave a thread of continuity through the imagery. Sometimes we even do that with the material we apply to the page.

I wanted to use some photos I had taken at the Dallas Arboretum, but couldn’t choose the best one, so I decided to do a series.

These will be relatively small watercolors, but you will see that I used painters tape to tape them all down. This will help reduce the buckling of the page as I start to work. I use a wet-on-wet watercolor technique to get my paint down pretty quickly. Then as the paint dries I layer more detail on top.

The next thing I do, is I get the page wet, and then I start to lay out the color. I move across the entire 4 pages so that I can carry the same color from one page to the next. I mix a lot of my watercolors vs straight out of the tube color, so this gives me the consistency in color across the pages. I hope my video comes through! It is fun to see how the images start to evolve. I will post part two as I work more on these paintings!
